One Step Closer…

to a new patio! Actually several steps closer! Seth’s Dad arrived on Wednesday afternoon to build our patio (and a fence, small retaining wall, and a kayak rack…), and we had the concrete delivered yesterday!

The concrete truck couldn’t get into the backyard, so the concrete had to be wheelbarrowed back from the driveway. Our side yard is on a hill, so it was pretty interesting to get the wheelbarrow back there! We certainly did a number on the grass at the top of the hill, and the path got really slippery after a few trips back. Seth was in charge of the wheelbarrow, I was in charge of keeping the path smooth so the concrete wouldn’t dump out, and Mark was in charge of spreading the concrete.

It took about 40 minutes to pour it all and since it’s being covered in stone we didn’t have to do any finishing work on it.

Please don’t look too closely at the horrendous looking shed! The plan is to put some lattice on the sides and grow some climbing vines up the side.

After the concrete was poured, we borrowed our neighbor’s truck to finally get rid of the remaining branches/stump pieces from the tree we took down. Then we headed to two different stone yards for bricks and a few extra pieces of stone. The original plan, or one of the plans at some point, was to have an outdoor fireplace in the back left corner of the patio. But, I also really wanted a high table/countertop to go next to the grill. So we nixed the fireplace and Seth and Mark built the table yesterday afternoon! I don’t have a picture of it yet, but it has brick columns for legs and a stone top. It. Looks. Awesome.

The fence is being built today, and I’ll make sure to post more pictures as we make progress!
